Your job is to help an alcoholic person and to get them out of their reverie. For that, you seriously need to consider and think about the best way possible to help an alcoholic person.
There are a few things which you need to keep in mind about approaching and helping an alcoholic person such as:
- Get to know about the alcoholic disorder
The first thing which you need to know is about the alcoholic disorder whether the person is an extreme alcoholic or not. Read and explore more about alcoholic addiction before approaching the suspected person.
- Decide what will you say
You have to let the alcoholic person know that you care about him and which is why you are here to help him. Avoid being negative and avoid hurtful comments as that can badly demotivate the alcoholic person and he also might refuse taking help from you then.
- Talk at the right time
Make sure that you talk to the patient at the right time when you have privacy and no chances of being overheard. The patient will be attentive to you if there is no interruption.
- Be a good listener
You have to be a very good listener in front of the patient and you must not take anything personally no matter whatever they say. You have to give them time to make a very honest decision and be a very good listener.
- Give your full support
The only thing you can do for the patient is to give your support and not force him to go for the treatment if he is not ready. Your support also includes being secretive about this whole issue especially if the patient wants to keep his affairs private and does not want to open up about it. Remember you are here to solve the problem, not aggravate it.
- You have to intervene
Intervene does not necessarily mean to interfere or force. It actually means proper planning and planning the best treatment. If the patient is very resistant, then you have to intervene in and then portray the best option you can give. This is done especially when the patient is in critical condition and has to get out of it.
